What do you do when it comes to giving gifts to team members? As leaders, I think that our best gifts might require some explaining. Explaining a gift may show our understanding of the person’s situation, that we know their passions, and even their concerns. A gift given that needs no explanation might mean that it is common, or it might mean that you have already discussed it so well that it was anticipated. But even if the gift was anticipated, there is the backstory about it. A leader can also discuss what will be done with the gift and talk about how it might be used. This is a season of gift giving, what will you be doing for your team members? We can express that we know our team members by the forms of the gifts that we might share with them. If you provide team members with a general gift, then you might expect general performance and loyalty. What team is going to reach their full potential by meeting the expectations of the general population? That seems to be unreasonable to think that full potential and general expectations will align. The leader who shows their team members that they are known by the words and gifts they share has exponential capability. How will you share gifts this year with your team? The holidays are great times for gift giving. What is the first thing that you are going to do about it in the next seven days?
As brothers and sisters of faith we have been given the gift of Jesus. What a powerful gift of love but that gift must come with some explaining. To receive Christ, we have to accept his cleansing gift. We get to live a new life and way of being. We are no longer just a human being but a human doer as well. Without the explanation and acceptance, it is like we have been offered a gift and it has never been unwrapped. We read, “God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him.” 1 John 4:9 NLT. Have you ever experienced a child that just ravaged and tore through the wrapping paper on a present? Have you ever seen someone who methodically and delicately unwrapped a package? Both achieved the unwrapping and might well be better off than those that still have their gifts unwrapped. What part of the gift of Christ is not unwrapped for you? Finding the gift of Jesus today and opening the present is up to us. Maybe we have left some wrapping paper on the gift and your instructions are under that part of the gift. I think that it is time to unwrap the gift. Go ahead and tear it open or do the delicate unwrap. Jesus is just glad that you are ready to open it. Once it is open, it is time to install the batteries and make the relationship work. I promise, it is likely to be one of the most energizing gifts you could ever receive. If you have it, are you willing to share it with others? What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Jesus, thank you for the gift of the examples of your walk here on earth. Thank you for teaching us about love. Thank you for forgiving us and for paying the price of our trespasses. Guide the process of understanding these gifts. May we be overcome with joy and our hearts be warmed every time we touch the wrapping. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
