December 17 Freedom to.....?

Choose to be kind more than right?

As leaders, we hold the responsibility of using the powerful word duet of “freedom to…”. At all times throughout history, leaders have had the power of freedom to. Leaders have used the freedom to subvert genocide, slavery, and conquerors. They have used the power to liberate, express love, and show compassion. When you can choose, you could exercise the two words like a melody. It is like bringing them together so that "freedom" and "to" become a musical duet. But the power of the freedom to includes the power to avoid, abandon, and abstain, just as it has the power to engage, enmesh, and embrace. There have been societies that have erased freedom by illuminating the power of the freedom to phrase. As a leader, one can choose to be a leader that uses the phrase to build up, enhance value, and grow our team. Eliminating this power for those being led is not a road of aligned value. This is a tough lesson and challenge of leadership, as not everyone has a desire to be aligned. Where might you see examples in your community and culture right now that need the freedom to duet? Perhaps it is time for you to bring the phrase freedom to inside of your sphere of influence. You have the freedom to or not. Will you choose to be inspired to do so this week? What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?

As brothers and sisters in Christ, we have chosen to follow Jesus. We, therefore, have the use of this word duet as well. King Solomon had all the resources he needed to accomplish the building of the temple. But before he started, he prayed to God. He did not start without God. How often do we start anything without going to God first? I suspect it is the norm and not the exception for many. When Solomon prayed, God answered his prayer and granted him a request for anything he wished. Talk about an example of using the power of freedom to. He could have asked for anything! But he asked for wisdom. He exercised his freedom to love others. He asked for the wisdom needed to act and think which is a God honoring concept. We see in Romans 6 a passage that explains the freedom to love and live outside of the law of the Old Testament. This passage is all about the freedom to concept. We have the freedom to continue to live a life of sin but are reminded that we died to the way of sin. We hung that “freedom to” up on the cross just as Jesus hung there. It was a choice. Now I ask you, my brothers, and sisters and those that want to know and love Jesus, what freedom to are we exercising in our life that we need to stop, abandon, and exit stage left? I am just as curious as to what freedom to you might put in its place. For me today, I will remember the theme of freedom to by starting every morning with a daily freedom to quest. If you wish, join me.

Let us pray, Heavenly Father, everything in the existence of the universe is recognized as your freedom to do everything. You have created us and given us the ability to reason, have experiences, to study scripture, and examine tradition. Guide our hearts back this week when we begin to go down the destructive path of freedom which might not honor you. Awaken us with your Holy Spirit to choose to take a path of collaboration and love. We thank you for creating a world by which we can live with the freedom to draw nearer to you. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen,
