December 7 Multipliers or magnifiers up!

Magnifiers change and challenge perceptions.

Leaders impact the perceptions of our members. If our team members’ attention is away from the value our team provides, the perception needs to be examined. If we want to focus on value, we must get close to it. In doing that, we might need to magnify it. Think about germs for a moment. When you clean a kitchen counter you must address the entire counter to get all the germs. The germs are too little to be seen with your eyes. There are mites and other items around that are too small to see also. If you could see where the germs were, one would not waste energy and resources cleaning things that were already clean. A magnifying glass makes everything bigger. It even seems to show more light as well. But unlike science class where the magnifying glass was used, leaders do not run around holding up the glass to their members. But we do not need to because leaders themselves can be the magnifier. When was the last time you took a team member aside and thanked them under the magnifier of appreciation for what they have done? Our words of appreciation can break down limits. When leaders make sure that members are known, we break limits. What does it mean to be known? It might mean that you know your members’ partners, their parents, or their children. It might mean you know their hobbies or what they like to do for entertainment. To know this level of detail might require the leader to look in deeper than they are currently. It is very much like holding up the magnifying glass. What is the first thing you can do to remove limits by using your tools?

As Christians, what are we trying to magnify? Could it be Santa Claus, presents under the tree, maybe the Christmas ham perhaps? We read, “I will worship toward thy holy temple, and give thanks unto thy name for thy loving kindness and for thy truth: For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” Psalm 138:2 ASV. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, what will we magnify in our celebrations? Maybe the word of God might be a great place to start. The holiday season can bring so many distractions which limit us from the reason for the season. Are you going to be engaged in the black Friday event? Perhaps you are waiting for the cyber-Monday event. If these have your attention, then you might be experiencing a limit. How would you strengthen your relationship during either of these events? Would you be able to make sure that you are expressing love, patience, and generosity? Maybe a real magnifying glass could be a physical reminder for us to place our focus intentionally. I would bet that a magnifying glass would fit in a purse, pocket, or a picture of one could be a screensaver on your phone or computer. Will we break the limits that society has put on Jesus’ birthday this year? How might you do it? What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?

Let us pray, Heavenly Father, magnify your glory on this earth. Shine your light and love. May everything about you be visible to us. Make all other distractions be set aside. Open our eyes to your love and to those that are in need during this season. May love be the gift we offer one another. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Together, Amen,
