July 5.You Make Me Smile.
Appreciation and affirmation are two top wants of people.
Words. There might not be a better tool to use as a leader than words. For sure, you can use a look of dissatisfaction to communicate. You can use a stare or glare or a smile to communicate also. But our nonverbal communication is open to a lot of possible miscommunications.
Words have a more direct call to action and most of all words can be encouraging. Try looking at a team member somehow and without words, communicate that you think they have done a great job over the last six months.
It is our words as team leaders and as entrepreneurs that have a positive influential power for those in connection with us. Where have your words been positive and encouraging in the most influential ways in the past? Has it been more than a week, a month, a year since that activity?
If so, why? When you take the time to add up the resources you have, I wonder if you put the number of positive or encouraging dialogues on the balance sheet? Our words can also slide to the other side of the spectrum of positive and encouraging to the negative and demeaning.
There seems to be enough of that occurring without any need of putting an emphasis on it. The words are one of your most influential and powerful resources and they cost nothing to use! Who might you share some encouraging words with that will affect your team for the next week or month?
What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
What sermon did you hear last week? If you did not hear a sermon last week perhaps you might recall a sermon from the past. It seems that we might hear some sermon topics about sin, about love or it might be a combo. But it seems that in society, we can get put in the spin cycle of bad news.
It is like the spinning drum of the washing machine rinsing away the positives of life. “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” Proverbs 18:21 NLT. So as a brother and sister in Christ, I ask, what words do you want to hear this week?
It seems that the messages we hear can certainly leave us wanting sometimes. What words might you be sharing? We might be able to classify words as giving life or death. There is always that in between ground though. Are the words you are sharing giving of death, life or somewhere in between?
Are you out of balance for the type of words that you are hearing and using? I think that my sphere of influence might be a little better off if I were to use even more encouraging words. Being a better leader can start with some of the simplest tasks and this might be one of them.
Remember, just because it is simple does not mean that it is easy. What can you do to change how you are using words in your world? What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Jesus, you sacrificed for me. You sacrificed for the good of the world. Your message is about love and loving the Father. Help us to soften our words of death and strengthen them for love and encouragement.
Make those that we meet this week to know that our words are not weapons of destruction but works of love. Guide us as we treat our tongues as part of your temple that you created us to be. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
