As a leader, what is your communication style? Are you a strong silent type or maybe a free-flowing river of words? Our tongues might be the strongest muscle of the body. I think that it is certainly the most dangerous as it can bring down and destroy people, communities and even countries.
Have you ever been the victim of someone’s verbal attack? One can be attacked even if speaking in sign language. A vicious dialogue in sign language does not have the same power on a person with hearing because of the delivery of the language. But the words can attack. So do the words from the tongue.
When our teams get off course, how do we get them back on track? Is it with a strong and powerful tongue of correction, accusations, or blame? I have heard the voice of the navy's Blue Angels flight team during a show. The voice is calm and respectful even though the planes are hurling through the air at jet aircraft speed.
Where has your tongue been too strong and harmed others? Where have you used a calming voice to keep others from hurling towards a crash of some kind? Maybe this week we can stop a crash before it happens by controlling our tongue. Use the muscle well this week and give it the exercise that helps and heals without limits.
What is the first thing you can do about it in the next seven days?
It is interesting how our past patterns of behavior affect us in the future. Our speech patterns are no exception. Our tone of voice and the way we were corrected by our parents or guardians is likely to affect the way we correct others. But we are cleansed as brothers and sisters in Christ.
We read, “to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.” Titus 3:2 NIV. Where have our old patterns popped up that were established prior to being cleansed in Christ? Maybe the love and compassion that we have been extended can tame the wild beast of our tongue.
I have an image in my head of being in a cage at the circus and the lion tamer is me. But the creature on the pedestal in the ring is a tongue, not a lion or tiger. I think that more people have been harmed by these powerful tongues than have been harmed by lions and tigers.
Who in your sphere of influence would you appreciate a taming of the tongue? I know that those I love the most would appreciate it if I would consider taming my own when I am tempted to use its power in a harmful way.
They are the ones near it the most often. Is putting a limit on the use of our tongues worth our attention this week? What is the first thing you can do to tame your tongue in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Heavenly Father, we listen for your still small voice in the depths of our hearts and souls. How comforting it is for us to not suffer from your tongue. For nothing could withstand its power. Guide us as we tame our tongues. Wash away our tongues’ harming power and place on the tip of our tongues compassion and love. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
