When we lead teams, we are likely on occasion to see or to be part of a quarrel or an all-out fight. Those quarrels or fights generally come from a desire to have something that we want. It is normally about us or our team over some other team. The focus is an I win, and you lose proposition.
Sometimes I wonder just how much energy and resources are wasted on the win lose proposition instead of being generally focused on value delivery. This battle can happen internally to a company just as easily as it can occur externally between companies. Where have the quarrels been lately that you are involved in?
Have they been internal or external? Where might you be able to change the perspective right away from win lose to value driven? I am sure that resources can be better used if we do. This can especially be true if the fight is occurring internally.
Where is your team focused on battling in a win lose scenario? What is the first thing you can do about it in the next seven days?
The weekend has come and is quickly departing or has left. Did it start or end with any quarrels? How about the last month or year, were there any quarrels then? In our competitive society a quarrel is an everyday occurrence. We see quarrels and fights in our homes, our neighborhoods, and even in our leadership of the government.
But our quarrel or fight always starts with us. A quarrel is about my perspective and my inward thinking. We read, “You want something, but you cannot get it. You kill and want what others have. But you cannot have what you want. You argue and fight. You do not have what you want, because you do not ask God.” James 4:2 NIV.
I normally do not find God in the fight. Have you ever wondered where God goes when we argue or fight? Maybe he does not go anywhere. Maybe it is us that goes somewhere, away mainly from his love, joy, and grace. Where have you quarreled and have not come back yet?
Who were the participants and are they away as well? I have known others who have never left the fight of the past and carry it with them with the wounds of the past. We all have the possibility to carry the quarrel forward. Is it in our best interest to carry the fight or to find where God has brought peace?
There is always peace available during the fight, but you must look for it. Perhaps that is the fight, the fight to find God’s peace when we feel the least like pursuing it. What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Heavenly Father, our quarrel is never about you, it is about us. We might get upset or outright angry with you, but it is us that have the problems. You are beyond reproach. We find
our challenges and disappointments in our perspectives.
Guide us today to navigate through the peaks and valleys. Make the arguments and fights, even those as vicious as Cain and Abel’s, be transformed into relationships based on your love. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
