As entrepreneurs, many of us lead teams that are results oriented. We coordinate resources of many kinds to deliver value to our customers. But when we are IN those processes, we agree to dig in and even get muddy. We get dirty, worn down either physically, mentally, or both because we are getting the work done.
So how do you or the team get a renewal every day? We can relate to the concept of renewal by thinking about the clothes that you wear. You pick out the clothes for the day. They are fresh, clean, and presentable as you desire. You then wear them throughout the day, and you eventually take them off as they get soiled.
So tomorrow comes and you choose something new. Even if you do not have a replacement set of clothes one will lay the articles to air out at a minimum. Where is your business not getting renewal? It might be in some departments, divisions or with some of your people?
They might be getting muddy and even create caked on layers if we do not create a way to have renewal. What happens if when you get your clothes soiled your answer is to simply put on more clothes? Nothing gets renewed but merely covered up or layered over.
If we do this our divisions, departments or people would be like giant puffballs of clothes and somewhere beneath those layers is our purest value proposition. I am not sure that the layers of clothes would be attractive to our customers or one another. It would affect how efficient your team operated. It seems reasonable that the layer on layer would begin to limit us.
The soil is then unlikely to be removed and becomes hidden within the company. That is not a results-oriented approach which looks internally as well as externally. Where do you know some layering has occurred in your company? You might find it if you go looking for limits.
What is the first thing you can do about it in the next seven days?
We live in a broken world. But as Christians, our hope is not in this world. But when we live in that world, we get soiled like our clothes do. When we fail to love one another, it is like getting splashed with mud, walking into a dust storm or your food dropping from your spoon and rolling down your shirt. You are soiled.
We read in Romans, "The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So, remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living.” Romans 13:12 NLT. Where do you need to remove the clothes of yesterday and be renewed? Christ came to show us that God offers that cleansing every day.
The choice is will we accept it and put on the new wardrobe today. Let us be intentional about getting rid of our soiled layers and renewing more often. What is the first layer you want to get rid of? Where are you going to seek to renew? What is the first thing you will do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Heavenly Father, we thank you for your never-ending offer of renewal. Your grace is enough, and we fall away every day from it but you have given us the gift of renewal. Help us to remove the layers that we think are comforting but are just layers of soil upon soil.
Help us to remove them and to draw closer to you through that process. Let me start each day with a fresh wardrobe provided by you. Bring your renewal upon us now and may we participate to put on the fresh and new of a new day. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
