November 8. Mirror, Mirror Of My Heart.

Mark Queen • November 8, 2024

The last quarter is a great time to look deeply at ourselves.

Do you have any mirrors around your organization or home? A mirror is a very interesting tool. You might not have thought of a mirror as a tool, but it is something that leaders should consider. You can take a quick glance in a mirror to check to see if your hair is neat and that your appearance is not disheveled.

But you can also get serious and examine yourself in the mirror. When you look closely, you might see a hanging thread from a button. The freshness of your complexion might show and so might the wrinkles that show your years. You can also look at the expression of anxiety or joy that might be worn on your face.

As a leader, how deeply are we looking at our team and family members? Are we glancing at them just to see if they look tidy or are we examining them? If we are about a value proposition, we value our team members, and they deserve our focus. How might we mitigate their worries or their wrinkles?

How might we refresh their activities like the moisturizer refreshes the complexion? If you are not using your ability to reflect upon your team and organization, then it is likely that we are missing those dangling threads that you can see in the mirror.

If those threads get caught on something, it is possible that it will all come unraveled. Where might you want to look into the mirror of your business? It might be time for the leader to do some measurement and reflection.

As I remember, there are stories in the Old Testament where people were not able to look into the faces of Angels. Moses could not look at the burning bush. But as brothers and sisters in Christ, we are to be in relationship with one another. We are to love one another and have compassion for one another.

But how can we do that if we will not even look at one another. We read, “For if you listen to the word and do not obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.” James 1:23-24 NLT. How do we love ourselves, as God loves us, if we will not look at ourselves?

The mirror is a powerful tool for us. We might be glancing at it, or we can be looking deeply at our reflections. Are we looking just at our complexion, or can we look at how we are in action or not in action for God? Maybe we can find more compassion and be in more discussions with one another by starting with looking in the mirror at ourselves.

We might not like what we see when we look deeply, but we can take comfort in the fact that Christ accepts us. We are refreshed by Christ, our living water, not some temporary face cream. We do not need to fear the reflection. Are you ready to find your mirror and be the leader in your faith journey?

What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?

Let us pray, Heavenly Father, you can see us both on the inside and the outside. But we get caught up in the activities of this world. We know that we fall short of your expectations to love because you have sent us Jesus Christ.

May we reflect in the mirror and in our minds, as to where we might be in a stronger relationship with you. Guide us by your path and hold us in the comfort of the palm of your hand when we are hurting. May we have the courage to look deeply into the mirror of our hearts so that we might draw close to you.

Might the reflection of our hearts honor you and glorify your Holy name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
