As leaders, we set expectations and even have some rules. Without expectations, the energy of our teams would lack the direction needed to deliver value. We know in baseball that after a hit, the batter will run to first base. If the fielders catch the ball or advance it to the base before the batter gets there, he'll be out.
Do you see the set of expectations here? The offense knows them, and the defense knows them. The coaches know them as do the crowd and even the television spectators. What are the ten most important expectations for your team? What about for yourself or your family?
Are they clearly communicated or do you or the team waffle at the thought of them, bending them as you need? In order to collaborate effectively we need some basic expectations. As a leader, we also have the responsibility to assure that possibilities are also maintained. Teams need both expectations and possibilities.
Imagine how your team might be able to collaborate at a higher level if possibilities and expectations were clearly defined and encouraged. What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
People of faith, what are your expectations for yourself? Are we living as a people for the short-term benefits and satisfaction? Do you recall Esau's limited time frame and expectation for satisfaction?
We read, "Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done.” Hebrews 12:17 NIV. As a people of faith, we have so many stories and parables that teach us to hold on for the long term.
We have stories that encourage us to not give in to the nearsightedness that tempts us. Where have your aspirations been too short? Where might you think out one, three, or even five years into the future? Can you identify ten top rules for your own progress with Christ?
We can make some significant progress with just such a vision. With Jesus' assistance, we can change lives and bring Christ to the forefront. It is not time for tears of regret. Let us plan for some tears of joy. If we can choose tears of joy or tears of regret, which will we choose?
Who in your community can you encourage to seek some possibilities and extend to them some joy? Each of us have the ability to collaborate and bring either type of tear to ourselves as well as others. What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Heavenly Father, like a flock of ducks rising from a lake, let us make a joyful sound. May the joy of expectations that are centered on you command our attention. May tears of joy compel us to honor you. May we move closer to those tears and away from tears of pain and suffering. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
