July 10. Celebrating Sails and Rudders.
Sails and rudders align to help us power through change.
Things can change quickly in business and in our personal lives. Events can occur that swing our momentum in different directions. Has that happened in your recent past? As you look back can you notice that the tension builds, fear sets in and for some, panic ensues?
As leaders, we might recognize that controlling the growth from tension to panic can be all about mindset. In the boating world, as captain we can set the sails, but we do not control the wind. When the wind changes it is us that needs to adjust. It is not often that we must abandon ship, our teams, our clients, or our value proposition.
Where has the wind changed in your business recently? What might you do to make some course corrections? The captain can turn the sails, manipulate the rudder, and even change the course temporarily to achieve the vision that has been communicated to everyone on the team.
Do we allow the uncontrollable wind and our reactions to it to dictate what the next move is? Maybe we can adopt the curious mindset and remind ourselves of the importance of our attitudes. What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
As brothers and sisters in Christ, we are not immune to the tragedies, the changes, or the advancement of our society. We will experience many trials and tribulations. But it is up to us to decide how to react to them. Do you remember King David retrieving the Ark of the Lord after Saul had ignored it?
“David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets." 1 Chronicles 13:8. But Uzziah died when he touched the Ark.
It seems that the symbolic wind changed, and it changed David's momentum. "David was now afraid of God, and he asked, 'How can I ever bring the Ark of God back into my care?”” 1 Chronicles 13:12 NLT. Where has the wind changed in your faith recently?
As participants in a broken world our faith will likely be challenged just as sure as the wind direction will change. But remember, God is still the same. Jesus is still the Savior who died on a cross for you and for me. So, what will you do to adjust your sails and not abandon our Savior and his message?
What is the first thing you can do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Father God, we are easily distracted. Help us to look for your light in the darkness. Guide us towards your love and remind us of the beauty of your world where you are the great constant.
May we adjust our navigation to stay the course and to draw closer to you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
