As leaders and entrepreneurs, we are always selling something. It could be our reputation, our team, a project, a viewpoint, or our value proposition. That is a good thing because our services and goods have a purpose. That purpose is driven by our value proposition and our why.
But it can take getting to know people to really be able to transfer your vision of value to them completely. Where have you lost a relationship because you did not connect about your value? Where did a relationship stop progressing when you did not get to stay focused on your value?
I think that our strongest value exchanges are when our customers and clients are in rhythm with us. Where might you be out of rhythm with your professional relationships? When we are out of rhythm it is difficult to stay focused.
Recognizing the misalignment is difficult though because it requires the leader to listen to different perspectives than our own. It is much easier to play two songs at the same time and see how they are not in rhythm together. When you play songs in this manner it is not enjoyable, creates frustration and almost an immediate reaction that causes at least one song to stop being played.
If you do not control the song being played then the listener will do a different reaction like plugging their ears, walking away or maybe something drastic like turning off the energy. Today is a great day to focus and evaluate the rhythm of the teams you are serving with.
What can you do about being out of rhythm in the next seven days?
We read in the Bible, “The people of the island ... when they had waited a long time... they changed their minds and decided he was a god.” Acts of the Apostles 28:4-6 NLT. Our first impressions can be and often are wrong. The people of Malta first saw Paul as a victim of a boat crash, then prisoner, then a god.
How about that for a change of first impressions? We are people called to be in relationship with one another, to work and worship, side by side. That call is not one to separate us through our individualistic ideas but to bring us into a relationship with one another and our Lord.
Where might a first impression in the past keep you from growing in a relationship? Where might your impression of a brother or sister in Christ need a little deeper look? When we are in rhythm our performance is enhanced. We play a better concert for the benefit of our team.
Our relationship with Christ can grow deeper. Today is a great day to focus on our Lord and Savior’s perspective. How many times today will you replace your own rhythm with his beat? We must listen for the small still voice and drum beat to hear it because our own desires easily get our attention.
What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Heavenly Father, you know our first impressions. Help us to move through them so that we can be in relationships that honor you. Guide us and shine your light so that we can see the potential of others in our lives.
Help us to open our ears and hearts to hear your first impression. Make our hearts first impression, see past the first impressions of this world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
