As the leader of a team, or an entrepreneurial team and possibly an entrepreneurial family, we have much to pass onto others. I like to think that there are four specific areas to be sure to cover. We all have some level of individual financial lessons and thoughts we might share.
We also operate in some concept of a society or civic relationship. We also have our ideas about the mind and body connection known as faith and fitness. Entrepreneurs have an additional area of concern which is of business lessons and business-related topics.
What have you done to leave a legacy and communicate the lessons of importance of your time on this earth? If you do not make the dedicated effort to capture it and transfer it, the probabilities are that it will not be picked up by others. There is a significant difference in having a baton and passing a baton.
Imagine a relay race where the baton is just left in the middle of a leg of the race. Leaving the baton does not have the same impact as passing the baton in an intentional handoff. There are valuable items that are intellectual property that are lost if we are not intentional about the hand off.
Most people do not have a planned handoff of assets, let along intellectual property and lessons. What is the first thing that you can do about handing off your baton in the next seven days?
It just was not meant to be. King David was not to build the temple for his God. But he knew that there was a legacy to be transferred. “Now, my son, may the LORD be with you and give you success as you follow his directions in building the Temple of the LORD your God.” 1 Chronicles 22:11 NLT.
We read about the four things that he gathered and left for his son Solomon. Stone, wood, and metals were the materials collected and labor was applied to them to prepare and finish the materials for the temple. I like to think that there are four areas of our faith that we can be working on to prepare our legacy for our next generations.
How are we giving, being, doing and with what attitude? When we focus on Christ and his sacrifice, we can look towards ourselves in these four areas to draw nearer to him. There might not be any better way to help the next generation than to help ourselves to connect with Christ first and then share with them our path.
Just displaying your path might not be enough. One might need to share, to document and to talk about these four areas. What area would you like to draw closer to Christ in, giving, being, doing, or your attitudes? If we can be inspired enough to work on the areas ourselves, we have something that might inspire growth in others.
Our ability to inspire today might be the first step in creating something of an inspiring legacy for our family. What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Heavenly Father, your legacy to us is documented in the Bible and lived out in the hearts of us as followers of Jesus Christ. But through the temptations of this world, we separate ourselves from your love. Guide us and send us your Holy Spirit to touch us.
May we help one another to give, to be, to do, with an attitude that draws us nearer to you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
