As leaders of families, companies, and organizations we give. Our value propositions are actually about giving to others. In our families we give love. In our companies and organizations, we deliver goods and services.
We receive love back from our families and our companies receive money and resources in return for their giving. But where is our emphasis, is it on the giving or the receiving? By placing our focus on our giving or delivering of value to others, we might be able to develop raving fans.
I think that this might just be the best way to have a continuously improving value proposition. We must stay open to receiving and be thankful for it though. I am not suggesting that we only give. To give, you must have something to give but we always have an inventory when we have a team.
In companies they receive gifts because someone believes that we have earned it. The ability to give and receive places a responsibility of being accountable to our team members. That accountability starts with us as the leader. Where can you put an emphasis on giving this week?
What is the first thing you can do about it in the next seven days? Will you be accountable to that first action?
The apostle Paul carried a message to the world. He was giving and sharing the gospel. He writes about hard work and helping others. But how do you support when your focus is on sharing and giving to others?
It might start with making sure that what we are giving fits to the needs of the people we are sharing with. It may not be the best sharing to give someone a Bible written in English if they read Spanish. We can achieve a level of accountability in our sharing and giving by measuring the result of the impact.
This is a challenge to us in our world today, just as it was for Paul's in his day. "And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts of the Apostles 20:35 NLT.
Where might you have a stronger focus on giving for the second half of the year? Have you realized that half of the year is gone? What can you do to make an emphasis of giving in the second half of the year? Will you allow yourself to be accountable for an intentional increase in your giving method that you determine is right for you.
We can give forgiveness, love, and trust to name just a few items that are nonfinancial gifts that have extreme value. Remember, what you measure matters. That is why you measure it. What is the first thing that you can do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Lord Jesus, you gave your all. You taught us how to receive and how to give but we allow distractions to remove our focus. May our emphasis be on giving for this second half of the year.
Empower us to be accountable to you and thank you for your grace and forgiveness when we fall short. Keep our hearts open to receiving and be thankful for the blessing that you and others send to us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
