Do you have a purpose statement? Leaders need to know the purpose for their teams to operate most appropriately. If you can speak your customer's language but do not have purpose, where is the value? If you could tell the future, had industry secrets, or gave all your services away for free but did not have purpose, where would be the value?
I think I will run a little test this week. Maybe you would consider joining me? Instead of asking what people do professionally, let us ask them why they do what they do professionally or at work. Work with the phrase a little before you use it. Start by asking yourself.
Another great place to start would be to ask your team. One should probably not ask that question unless they have answered it themselves or else you might get caught off guard. Why do you do what you do? Why does your team do what they do? What is the first thing you can do about it in the next seven days?
As brothers and sisters in faith, what is your purpose? One might think that our purpose gets redirected regularly. A redirection might take one from filling the vehicle with gas, to grocery shopping, to what to prepare for lunch or dinner. We can redirect what we are doing all the time, but that does not mean your purpose has changed.
We read, "If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-2. NLT.
There was a purpose here being promoted. It is love. If we are going to grow with Christ, we might want to start with our purpose. For then we can make our measurement of aligning ourselves with God. What is the first thing you can do about it in the next seven days?
Let us pray, Heavenly Father, you have created it all. You have made it good, and you have given us free will. But sometimes we get lost with our purpose. We see distractions that take our minds and occupy them. Once we know you, we know our purpose is to stay close.
We can stay closest to you by living with love, by sharing the love, and by letting people know of your love. May the words of our mouth be words of love today. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen,
